As parents we often wonder if we are raising our children to be successful in today’s society. I was talking to a parent recently, who was very proud of the fact that their child had finished college and landed a good paying job. They felt, that as a parent, they had accomplished their duty. Don’t get me wrong, I think this is a great accomplishment. I also think this parent has every right to be proud of their child. My daughter has also finished college and landed a good paying job. I too am very proud of her. I want her to be able to take
care of herself. However, I can’t help but wonder if this parent realizes there is a greater accomplishment to being a parent then just making sure your child can provide for themselves? I am talking about following Jesus Christ.
To me the best gift you can give your child is not a college education and a good paying job. Although those things are important to make it in this world. But, the best gift you can give them is to have raised them in a loving Christian home. My parents provided that for me and when I became a parent I realized how important that is. The bible tells us in Proverbs 22:6: Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it. As a parent this scripture is very comforting.
The bible also tells us in 2 Timothy 15 – You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
What legacy are you going to leave your children?
